Speech Time & Words Per Minute Calculator
Plan a speech’s length before you present, or calculate your pace after timing a take. These are estimates, not an AI evaluation. Text and values are calculated in your browser without uploading them.
Estimate speech duration
Allow extra time for audience responses, slide changes, and pauses. The same script can take longer in a live talk.
Calculate your actual WPM
Time yourself from your first word to your last, including pauses.
Enter a positive whole word count and a duration above zero to see your pace.
How the estimates work
Duration in minutes = word count ÷ words per minute. Speaking pace = words spoken ÷ elapsed minutes. For example, 280 words at 140 WPM takes approximately two minutes before any additional pauses.
Words here are whitespace-separated text units containing a letter or number. Contractions and hyphenated terms count as one unit. This simple counter is suited to space-separated scripts; it is not a word segmenter for Chinese or Japanese.
There is no single correct pace for every speaker. Compare takes of the same exercise and listen for clarity rather than chasing a number.
