Disagree without losing the conversation — Speaking Exercise
Workplace · Intermediate · 1–2 minutes speaking
Practise disagreeing with a proposal while showing that you understand its purpose. Focus on the idea rather than the person.
Your speaking goal
Respond to the actual point
Plan your answer
Think in short notes rather than writing every sentence.
- What part do you agree with?
- What specific concern do you have?
- What alternative or test could help?
One way to begin
I agree that we need a quicker response. My concern is that this option could create more rework; could we test it with a smaller group first?
Illustrative opening. Use your own experience and words.
Try it out loud
State the other view fairly, explain one concern, then ask a genuine question. Avoid adding several criticisms before letting the other person respond.
Make a first attempt without stopping to fix every sentence. On the second take, change just one thing.
Use the free teleprompter →Listen back and reflect
Did you address their reason rather than a weaker version of their argument?
If you record yourself, notice one sentence that worked and one place where a pause or simpler explanation would help.
